OK Jazz — from 1965 known as TPOK Jazz (Tout Puissant OK Jazz) — was founded in Léopoldville in 1956 and became, alongside African Jazz, one of the two great rival orchestras that defined Congolese rumba. Under the leadership of the guitarist Franco Luambo it dominated Congolese popular music for more than three decades, famous for its interlocking guitars, biting social commentary and the extended sebene dance sections.
